Florida’s Rolling Limits for Medical Marijuana: A Simple Guide for Tampa Patients

Understanding Florida’s Rolling Limits for Medical Marijuana

If you’re a Florida medical marijuana patient in Tampa, FL, you may have noticed your limits don’t reset on the 1st of the month. That’s because Florida uses rolling limits — and if you don’t understand them, it can be hard to plan your purchases. At Dr. Julia Springs’ downtown Tampa clinic, we explain these rules to every new and returning patient so you never run out unexpectedly.

Think of Your Limits Like Buckets

You have two main buckets:

• Flower Bucket (smokable marijuana)

• Non-Smokable Bucket (vapes, edibles, tinctures, creams, drops, concentrates, etc.)

When you buy something, you scoop from your bucket. That amount that you scoop is gone until the timer runs out — then it pours back in automatically.

These are your orders, or ‘buckets’

The Flower Bucket

• Standard amount: 2.5 ounces every 35 days

• Refills on day 36 after each purchase

• Possession cap: 4 ounces at any one time

• Your doctor can request a bigger bucket if medically necessary (some patients have higher limits)

The Non-Smokable Bucket (Aggregate)

• Standard total: 24,500 mg THC every 70 days for all non-smokable products combined

• Includes vapes, edibles, tinctures, creams, and more

• Each product type has a “daily maximum” number — for example:

• Vapes: 350 mg/day → 24,500 mg/70 days

• Edibles: 60 mg/day → 4,200 mg/70 days

• Tinctures/Capsules: 200 mg/day → 14,000 mg/70 days

💡 Important: These “daily maximums” are not actual daily limits. They’re just a math formula to figure out your 70-day total.

If you have 11,000 mg of vape available and enough room in your Aggregate, you can buy it all in one visit — you don’t have to spread it out day by day.

How the Aggregate Works

The Aggregate is your combined total for all non-smokable products.

• If the Aggregate is full, you can’t buy any more non-smokable products — even if one category still shows room

• Products roll back into your limit on day 71 from the purchase date

Examples

Let’s assume you have the standard limits and your buckets are completely full.

Flower Bucket Example

  • Starting amount: 2.5 ounces in your 35-day Flower bucket

  • March 1 purchase: You buy 1 ounce of flower

  • Amount left immediately after purchase: 1.5 ounces

  • When that 1 ounce returns: April 6 (day 36 from purchase) — at that point, you’ll be back to 2.5 ounces available if you haven’t bought more in the meantime

Non-Smokable Bucket (Aggregate) Example

  • Starting amount: 24,500 mg THC available across all non-smokable products

  • March 1 purchase: You buy 5,000 mg of vape

  • Amount left immediately after purchase: 19,500 mg THC

  • When that 5,000 mg returns: May 11 (day 71 from purchase) — at that point, your bucket will be full again if you haven’t made additional purchases

💡 Tip: Every purchase starts its own 35-day or 70-day timer. If you shop multiple times, different amounts will roll back in on different dates — like multiple timers running at once.

Important for All Patients

Some patients have larger buckets because their doctor submitted a Request for Exception. If that’s you, your flower, route totals, or Aggregate may be different. Always check your MMUR orders for your exact numbers — that’s the most accurate guide to your personal limits.

Tips to Avoid Running Out

1. Check MMUR before you shop — it shows how full your buckets are and when they’ll refill

2. Mark refill dates for big purchases so you know exactly when they’ll return

3. Renew your orders at least one week ahead of time and avoid any gaps in your orders! Especially important for those patients with RFEs, as we have to submit those with your orders every time!

4. Talk to us if you think you may need more than the standard amounts

Bottom line: Rolling limits are just timed buckets. Flower refills on day 36; all other products refill on day 71. The “daily maximums” are just a way the state calculates your 70-day totals — you can buy more than that in a single day if you have enough available and Aggregate room.
